Updates to otHELLo: EXAULT / SIN and the SIN System Core Rules
Both otHELLo: EXAULT/SIN and the SIN System Core Rules receive much-needed updates.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve taken a fine-tooth comb through both the setting-specific rulebook for OTHELLO: EXAULT / SIN and the universal SIN System Core Rules. The goal was to eliminate edge cases, clean up some mechanics, and make the rules even easier to run right out of the box.
Here is a breakdown of what’s new, what’s been clarified, and how these changes improve play at your table.
1. Mechanical Polish & Edge-Case Rules
-
Explicit Token Refresh Timing:
While flipping white and black tokens is central to resolving checks, the rules now explicitly define when spent tokens revert to their starting orientation. Non-corrupted, non-wounded tokens refresh at the end of every scene or after taking a brief rest in a secure location.
-
Codified EXAULT Fallback Costs:
Using an EXAULT ability normally flips a white token from its paired opposing stat to black (HALO drains MIND, PSY drains SOUL, ETHOS drains BODY). But what happens if that opposing stat has no white tokens left to flip? Instead of leaving it to mid-scene GM improvisation, we've codified three explicit fallback options:
- Stat Strain: Suffer 1 direct wound to the opposing stat.
- Doyen Advantage: Grant 1 white token directly to the Doyen's active pool.
- Accelerated Corruption: Advance your character's SIN Progress by +2 instead of +1.
-
Action Caps on Expanded Pools:
Reaching SIN Progress 10 allows a stat pool to break past the standard 5-token cap. We’ve explicitly confirmed that even with an oversized pool (6+ tokens), the maximum limit of tokens flipped per action remains strictly capped at 3.
2. Setting Integration & Black-Market Gear
-
Streamlined OTHELLO VII Reference:
The world guide covering OTHELLO VII, from the elite Spires down to the overcrowded Bowels, has been reorganized into quick-reference summaries and clean tables. Key setting elements like Bio Rent, Register colors (Red and Gold), genetic harvesting, and faction dynamics are now far easier to scan during a session.
-
SIN Suppressants:
To ground the setting's black-market economy directly in player choices, we've added SIN Suppressants to the gear list. Administering a dose freezes your character's SIN Progress for the remainder of the current scene, but triggers a mandatory BODY wound from physical backlash as soon as the scene ends.
3. Usability & Character Sheet Redesign
-
Inline Drain Reminders:
To reduce rulebook lookups during combat and tense scenes, the character record now includes explicit drain tags right next to the EXAULT selection options:
[ ] HALO (Drains MIND)[ ] PSY (Drains SOUL)[ ] ETHOS (Drains BODY)
-
CORRUPTED Status Checkboxes:
I added dedicated [ ] CORRUPTED checkboxes adjacent to each stat's 5-dot wound track. When all available tokens in a stat are wounded, checking this box provides a clear visual reminder that all actions with that stat automatically default to "Failure, AND" until cleansed or treated.
4. Updated Generic SIN System Core Rules
Alongside the OTHELLO revisions, I’ve also updated the standalone SIN System Core Rules (Revised Edition). This setting-agnostic document provides the clean, dice-less framework, built around token management, BUT/AND narrative modifiers, and wound-driven stat degradation, for GMs who want to port the engine into their own custom settings.
What's Next?
The revised rulebook sections and updated character record layouts are ready to drop directly into your games. If you're running a campaign or testing out these new options in an upcoming session, I'd love to hear how the EXAULT fallbacks and revised sheet layout feel in actual play!
